UNIT DESCRIPTION:

The University of Guam Marine Laboratory (UOGML) was founded in 1970 and serves as a major institution for marine science research in the Western Pacific and Micronesia. UOGML has a strong track record in basic and applied research in ecology, taxonomy, fisheries, and monitoring of coastal ecosystems. Recent research initiatives have expanded UOGML’s capacities in marine genomics and coastal oceanography, with an emphasis on land-sea connections, coastal development, and sustainability in the age of climate change. The UOGML is uniquely positioned to pursue the above agenda given its close proximity to some of the most diverse and unique marine environments in the world.

We anticipate that the crustacean biologist will expand the Marine Laboratory’s expertise and research of regional relevance by investigating patterns of crustacean diversity and distributions to enable a better understanding of relationships within and between taxonomic groups, test hypotheses regarding these relationships within a systematics and biogeographical framework. The UOG Marine Laboratory is ideally located for ready access to field sites for sample collection, access to molecular genetics laboratory spaces, microscopy (including scanning electron microscopy), and laboratory space for morphological investigations. Access to computational resources for data analyses are available on campus. Through recent investments by the National Science Foundation, a biorepository was established at UOG that provides support for collections-based research. It is expected that the successful candidate will leverage the resources at the Marine Laboratory to develop an extramurally funded research program and contribute to a collaborative and collegial work environment. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the UOG Master of Science (MS) Program in Biology by mentoring graduate students and providing outstanding classroom instruction in Invertebrate Biology. In addition, the Crustacean Biologist will provide service to the Marine Laboratory, MS Biology program, University, and the broader Guam community..
