Gone are the days when choosing where to travel was a care-free exercise of day dreaming and indulging our wanderlust. With ever-changing travel restrictions and the rise of new variants, picking places to travel in 2022 requires more thought, research, and planning.

Perhaps there is a silver lining in that. Where we travel matters. And travelers now have a unique opportunity to pause, contemplate, and deliberately mold a new, better, normal for the global tourism sector.

We can choose to return to the overtourism era of the 2010s, when travelers swarmed like lemmings to the latest spot trending on social media. Or we can choose to let go of our travel FOMO, spread out a bit, and appreciate all of Planet Earth’s beautiful destinations — even those in our own backyards.

To help you pick better places to travel in 2022, Travel Lemming’s team of 15 writers and editors has collectively curated 50 emerging destinations we think are worthy of your tourism dollars.

You’ve probably never heard of many of them, and that’s part of the point. Others are old favorites that deserve an opportunity to re-emerge from a difficult period. In light of the uncertainty still looming over international travel, this year’s list is heavy on domestic destinations.
