Musically, the song is a pop and R&B power ballad with Aaliyah utilizing her soprano tone. Lyrically, the song is about the protagonist asking how could the person that she loved and gave her heart to break her heart badly. The song was released as the album's sixth and final single by Blackground and Atlantic records on September 16, 1997. Upon its release the song was met with generally positive reviews from critics, with many praising Aaliyah's vocal delivery and tone on the record. Commercially "The One I Gave My Heart To" performed well peaking within the top 10 at number 9 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on the week ending on November 15, 1997. The song was just as successful on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart also peaking within the top 10 at number 8 on the week ending on December 6, 1997. The song also peaked within the top 20 at number 18 on Billboards Dance Club charts on the week ending on February 28, 1998. On October 21, 1997, the song was certified Gold by the RIAA. Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001), who performed under the mononym Aaliyah ( /ɑːˈliːə/), was an American recording artist, dancer, actress and model. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was raised in Detroit, Michigan. At the age of 10, she appeared on the television show Star Search and performed in concert alongside Gladys Knight. At age 12, Aaliyah signed with Jive Records and her uncle Barry Hankerson's Blackground Records. Hankerson introduced her to R. Kelly, who became her mentor, as well as lead songwriter and producer of her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number.
