What makes this the best beef tenderloin recipe?

  • It’s as easy as it gets!
  • Simple ingredients, but so much flavor
  • Takes just 30 minutes to cook

If you know me, you know I love to grill out. Grilled beef recipes are my favorite, especially steaks. I’ve tried everything from Grilled Beef Short Ribs to Grilled Picanha Steak, and love them all!

By far, one of my best grilling recipes is this grilled beef tenderloin recipe. It has so much flavor but is shockingly easy to make.

Equipment

  • Grill
  • Tongs
  • Meat thermometer
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Small bowl for mixing seasoning

As with any beef recipe, I highly recommend using a meat thermometer for grilling. It’s the best way to check the temperature of your beef to know whether it’s done cooking or not.

You want to be able to pull your beef tenderloin off the grill at just the right time to get the perfect temperature. Thankfully, meat thermometers are inexpensive and easy to use.

Ingredients

  • Beef tenderloin
  • Rosemary
  • Garlic powder
  • Sea salt
  • Pepper

For this recipe, I use 3 lb. cuts of beef tenderloin. The seasoning is a simple mix of rosemary, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. I always like to use sea salt—it has the perfect taste and texture!

Seasoning

When it comes to grilling tenderloin, I keep the seasoning blend simple. Rosemary, salt and pepper, and garlic powder highlight the natural flavor of the beef very well.

You can also use my Best Dry Rub for Steak or the Santa Maria seasoning we use for our Grilled Picanha Steak (Sirloin Cap).

How to Grill Beef Tenderloin

  1. Let your beef come to room temperature by allowing it to sit out of the fridge for about 30 minutes to 1 hour. Once ready, preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
  2. Mix rosemary, garlic powder, sea salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Generously coat both sides of your tenderloin with the seasoning mixture. Pat down the seasoning so it sticks well to the beef.

  3. Grill for approximately 30 minutes with the lid closed. Check frequently with a meat thermometer. For medium rare, you want an internal temperature of 135°F, or 145°F for medium.

  4. Let it rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing. Enjoy!

I love serving this recipe with my creamy horseradish sauce!

Recipe Tips

  • Always let your beef come to room temperature before grilling. This ensures it will cook evenly throughout.
  • Use a meat thermometer! Trust me, this will change your life if you don’t use one already. It makes it so easy to know when to take meat off of the grill.
  • Let your beef rest before you cut it! I always let any cut of beef rest before slicing into it. This lets the meat settle, keeping it nice and juicy.

Beef Tenderloin Degrees of Doneness

FAQs

Is beef tenderloin good for grilling? ›

Here's why beef tenderloin is superb for the grill: you get tender meat inside plus browned deliciousness on the outside.

What cooking method is best for beef tenderloin? ›

The food web and a great many cookbooks (very many of them highly reputable) recommend blasting a tenderloin in a hot oven, 450–500°F (232–260°C), for a relatively short time to cook it, followed by a counter rest.

How do you grill a tenderloin steak on a gas grill? ›

Light a charcoal fire in one half of a charcoal grill or preheat a gas grill to high for 10 minutes and lightly oil the grate. Place tenderloin on the hot grill and close the lid. Grill until well-seared, about 5 minutes. Flip and repeat on the other side.

Is grilled tenderloin the same as filet mignon? ›

To sum up: Filet mignon is part of a beef tenderloin, but a beef tenderloin is not a filet mignon. Instead, it houses the filet mignon, which comes from the end portion of the tenderloin.

Can you cut a beef tenderloin into steaks to grill? ›

Filet mignon is cut from the beef tenderloin, which is why it's sometimes called a tenderloin steak. The entire tenderloin roast is a large cut that's extremely versatile. It can be cooked whole for a spectacular dinner, but it can also be cut into a beautiful stack of amazing steaks.

Is it better to cook beef tenderloin fast or slow? ›

Slow-roasting in a low oven cooks the tenderloin evenly from edge to center. Basting the tenderloin with browned butter flavored with thyme and shallots enhances browning and gives it more flavor.

Should you salt beef tenderloin before cooking? ›

Generously season roast with kosher salt. Keep uncovered in refrigerator for at least 6 hours, or up to overnight. About 1 to 1½ hours before planning to cook, remove roast from oven and allow to come to room temperature. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.

Do you roast beef tenderloin covered or uncovered? ›

Bake uncovered 40 to 50 minutes or until thermometer reads at least 140°F. Cover beef with tent of aluminum foil and let stand about 15 minutes or until thermometer reads 145°F. (Temperature will continue to rise about 5°, and beef will be easier to carve.)

What temperature do you grill beef tenderloin? ›

Maintain a grill temperature (on the cool side) of around 325 - 350. A 6 pound beef tenderloin should take a little over an hour to reach our magic temperature of 130 degrees. Don't go by time though, cook to temperature. Once the tenderloin hits 130 degrees, remove from the grill and place on a platter.

How long do you cook a 2 inch tenderloin on the grill? ›

For a 2 inch steak(like a Filet Mignon) you will still grill it for 3-4 minutes per side over direct, high heat, but then you will move it to indirect heat until it reaches your desired internal temperature (which will take a few additional minutes).

How long to grill tenderloin for medium rare? ›

Grill until a meat thermometer registers 130°F (about 20–25 minutes) for medium-rare doneness or 140°F for medium doneness (about 25–30 minutes).

How long does it take to cook a 1 lb tenderloin on the grill? ›

Grill the tenderloin for 12 to 18 minutes.

Place the tenderloin over direct heat. Cover and cook, flipping the tenderloin only once, until the internal temperature reaches 140°F to 145°F, 5 to 7 minutes per side.

Should you marinate filet mignon before grilling? ›

Marinate steak for at least 1-2 hours in the refrigerator. However, for best results, use a steak marinade for several hours or overnight. The extra time allows the steak fibers to break down and tenderize before cooking.

What is the cooking time chart for beef tenderloin? ›
