Man Applauded for Defending Wife After She Cursed Out Mother-in-Law (2024)

Online commenters have applauded a man for taking his wife's side in an argument against his mother.

Posting in Reddit's "Am I The A**hole" (AITA) forum under the username u/dadof2throwWay, the man asked: "AITA for taking my wife's side after she screamed and cursed at my mother?" The post has garnered over 14,000 upvotes and more than 2,000 comments slamming the man's "controlling" mother. You can read the full post here.

In his post, the man said his wife Melody, who is currently pregnant with their first child, doesn't get along with his mother.

"[My mother is] very nit-picky about Melody, how much she does around the house, how emotional she is (Melody already cries very easily, and being pregnant has made her even more sensitive which is fine), the fact that she wants to be a stay-at-home mom...it just seems like nothing Melody does is okay," the man said.

On Monday, the women's relationship went from bad to worse after Melody brought home a rotisserie chicken for dinner.

"My mother came by...and started telling Melody the chicken is bad for her and she should not be eating that pregnant...and said she needs to eat something else. Melody said no and went to the backyard to FaceTime her family (out of state)," the man wrote. "When she came back my mom had thrown out the food and ordered take-out—a salad for Melody and pizza for everyone else."

When Melody discovered her mother-in-law had trashed her chicken, she yelled: "WHAT THE F**K IS WRONG WITH YOU? WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS SUCH A B**CH TO ME?"

The man then asked his mother to leave and told her she cannot come back until she apologizes to Melody.

"My dad thinks I'm right for taking Melody's side but my brother thinks I should always defend mom so AITA?" he asked.

Chicken During Pregnancy

Speaking to Parents, Dr. Karyn Morse, an OB-GYN at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, advised pregnant women to steer clear of rotisserie chickens that are being stored in a refrigerated case.

"Listeria can survive cold temps, which means there's still an off-chance they could make you sick," the magazine explained. However, cooked chicken that is still "under the warmer" is perfectly fine to eat.

"Chicken is a good source of protein during pregnancy...But if it's not thoroughly cooked and eaten while hot, it can be contaminated with harmful bacteria," BabyCenter Australia said.

"You can store leftover cooked chicken and other poultry in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Re-heating it until it's piping hot throughout should kill the bacteria, making it safe to eat," the website advised. "If you buy a hot, barbecued or roast chicken, either eat it immediately or refrigerate it and heat it again just before serving."

Redditors React

Many Redditors pointed out the rotisserie chicken was perfectly fine for the man's wife to eat and argued that his mother only threw it away so she could "exert her control."

"It was never about the chicken. It was always about exerting control over OP's [original poster's] wife. Grandma thought she called the shots, even in a household that isn't hers and she got a very rude awakening. NTA [not the a**hole]," u/FunkyChewbacca wrote.

"Your mother's horrific attitude towards your wife aside, chicken is absolutely a perfectly healthy thing to eat while pregnant!" u/what_ho_puck said. "Your wife needs protein and she needs fats. Get her another chicken and keep your mother away from her—she's not only unacceptably pushy and controlling, but she's [also] dead wrong about her 'advice,' too."

Redditor u/SakuraUnicorn added: "NTA. Good on you for standing up to your mom! Your mom needs to understand boundaries and be a decent human being to your wife."
