Problem with the puzzle on Torus. (8 Switches)

I am at a weird situation in the Earth Torus segment and I think something may have bugged out (Or I'm not smart enough) to get myself out of the situation. It's with the 8 switches puzzle. If this is a bug and in the wrong area, then apologise in advance.

I understand that pressing certain buttons have effects on other buttons. Such as it is:

  • Switch 1 affects 2
  • Switch 2 affects 1 and 3
  • Switch 3 affects 4
  • Switch 4 affects 5
  • Switch 5 affects 4
  • Switch 6 affects 4
  • Switch 7 affects 8
  • Switch 8 affects 6 and 7

As far as I can tell 7 and 8 have to be the same setting, always, because no other switch affects it, and they affect each other. Yet in my game, I am this strange situation where I have the following states:

  • Switch 1 is On
  • Switch 2 is On
  • Switch 3 is On
  • Switch 4 is On
  • Switch 5 is On
  • Switch 6 is On
  • Switch 7 is Off
  • Switch 8 is On

And I see no way of getting out of this. If I have missed something and it's a case of I'm not terribly bright then please help. What do I need to do to get out of this situation? Is there some kind of reset switch? Or is has the puzzle bugged out for me?

Kind regards and thanks in advance for any help.

This puzzle almost did my head in LOL. You're close, just UNDO what youv'e done by shooting them so they turn Red again and try a different sequence.

Spoiler

Show

Ok Starts with 1,2,7,8 on/green and protected 3, 4, 5, 6 off/red. Do 3, 4, 4, 6, 5 and firewall will be activated and all turn red. Then do a 2, 5, 8 and you're there.

if you're not at all red what I saw was
1 - 2
2 - 1, 3
3 - 4
4 - 5
5 - 4
6 - 5
7 - 8
8 - 6, 7

Worked for me anyway.

Hey thanks for the response, however at this point I don't know what I did to put myself in this situation at all to begin with.

I'm worried that switches 7 and 8 should be the same no matter what, because they only affect each other, meaning if I shoot or use the repair laser on either one of these two switches, it will always affect the other, and no other switch can affect it, so if they're different, they will always be different. I think I'm in an unsolvable state.

If memory serves, I could access lock 7 through lock 6 at some point. Not sure on the exact number, but at the very least, I had an external access to the 7-8 pair.

I did need a fair amount of fooling around to solve the thing, though.

I was in and out in less than 5mins, I guess I spotted the sequence quickly it really wasn't that hard imho

The not obvious part is knowing what the end state solution of the switches needs to be, but if you make and educated guess you'll probably be right is my advice

I have also found myself in an impossible state and I had to reload to an earlier save. What caused this for me was using the repair laser on covered red switch. What happened then was that the cover opened without changing the state of the switch, but the other affected switch changed state. Unfortunately you can't revert that, because shooting covered green switch doesn't do anything.

Anyway after reloading to a save before switch chamber my solution was as below:

1st stage: 3,4,5,6 red, 1,2,7,8 green
- use 3 or 6 -> partial download
- use 6 or 3 -> some more download and firewall activation (IIRC)
2nd stage: all switches turn red
- repeat stage 1 : turn on 3 and 6 in your preferred order
- turn on 7 (attention here one of the sets will be covered by lids, so using repair laser on any of them will get you into impossible state - in my game the 1&2 were covered)
- turn on 1
all green and good to go!

Thanks for that, I'm not saying it's hard, either. I'm saying that I think that I've found myself to be in an impossible situation. I'm thinking that switch 7 and 8 (from the looks of things) have to be the same value, because there is no way of affecting either of those switches with any other switch, and that they're only affected by each other. I am guessing that if you turn one off, the other turns off, in my game they're different colours. As I have explained, repeatedly.

Unfortunately, because apparently I'm a complete idiot - I actually overwrote my save game file by saving the progress of where I was at when I eventually gave up at the situation that I'm in and came away from the game. If I was to go back to an earlier save, I'd be considerably far back. I guess I could do this, and take the L as a lesson learned not to be an idiot with my saves. But I wanted to know if my fears were correct before going down the nuclear option.

Which judging from what you've put - yes they are, I am in an unsolvable situation. Thank you though! I appreciate the response. I also appreciate that you actually read what I wrote.

That would suggest that there is indeed a bug then. Unless 6 affects 4 and *sometimes* 7? Has anyone else had this? Thank you for giving me some insight.

oh I see what you mean, you believe you're stuck with a combination that you can't get out of. Well the switches are linked in pairs as I recall so if you map it out and can't find a way to get the sequence to shift the colours from one side to the other then you might have a point.

Is your game unmodded? If it is you can share the save and see if others can help or report as a bug

The Torus puzzle is definitely a challenge and a royal pain in the ass to solve. The problem is that if you get a sequence: 3456 as Green and 1278 as Red, then a solution is not obvious (to me). Also, if you get a sequence: 3456 as Red and 1278 as Green, the solution is more obvious. It helps to save your game just before you enter the room so if you get a sequence that is difficult to solve, just reload the savegame. Also, another issue I experienced is that the firewall announcement does not initiate (possibly due to mods). This firewall has to initiate in order to start the scripted events. If no firewall announcement, can't proceed so reload a savegame again. I found this part to be buggy and I have heard that certain sequences will prevent you from continuing.

For 3456 Red and 1278 green, my solution:
Stage 1. (Before Firewall/Reset.)
Repair Laser 3,6
Stage 2. (After firewall/Reset: this has to initiate!)
Repair Laser 2,
Personal Blaster/Hand Laser 3,
Repair Laser 5,3,8
Done!
