Elam, Col. Henry Hunt Mayo, who was then master of the Licking Valley Lodge, Newport, instituted the Mayo Lodge. Col. Mayo also instituted Robert Burns Lodge in 1848 and later accepted the charter of the old Licking Valley Lodge. Col.
Mayo, born Jan. 17, 1810, died in Covington 4, 1877. His father, Daniel Mayo was first postmaster in Newport in 1796 and later served as Cincinnati postmaster. Members of the Mayo family were among the first settlers to locate in Newport. Seventh street was originally named Mayo avenue and Mayo Circle in South Newport was named in honor of the Mayo family.
The lodge's history will contain historical highlights of the county, co the founding of various communities and accounts of the original turnpikes in the county. Recall Military Funeral One of the military funerals conducted by the Mayo Lodge was given to two of California's outstanding citizens, who served as officers in the Confederate Army during the civil conflict. They were Capt. William Corbin and his aide, Lt. James McGraw.
The two California sons fell victims of the proclamation of Gen. Burbridge of the Union forces, who ordered that any confederate soldier found in the area be "treated as "spies. It was on a weekend that Capt Corbin and Lt. McGraw returned for a brief visit from the fighting front when they were captured. Later, they were transferred to Camp Dennison, and were shot as spies by the Union forces.
Their bodies were returned here and military rites conducted by Mayo Lodge. Capt. Corbin was buried on his family lot in California while Lt. McGraw was buried in the old Baptist Cemetery at Flagg Springs. Capt.
Corbin was a great uncle of Ray Corbin, present secretary of Mayo Lodge. EDITOR, THE KENTUCKY POST: My attention has been called to a new project for the City of Covington that smacks of rotteness. It calls for razing of property; between the Ohio River the north and Fourth street on the south and extends from Madison avenue to Main street. This is for the purpose of having a new housing unit. And what taxes does a housing unit pay to the City of Covington? Not a nickle.
And the taxes that would have been paid on the same do certainly run to more than a nickle. As a result the taxpayers have to foot this loss. The assessed value of the property as given in the papers is stated to be about $300,000 and the real estate folks list it as about $800,000. In order to replace the same elsewhere- using the same type structure and material would run into the millions of dollars, considering the present cost of building. Of course the materials that would be saved for the bidders for the same would make a nice figure upon which they could make a huge profit and so the bidders would be for such a move.
The government repealed on March 3, 1891, the right of preexemption that gave to the prop-. verty owner some rights. Now look at the property that will have to be razed to fit in with the rotteness program. And the city commissioners acceded to the same rotteness. I wonder if the city commissioners have ever visited the part of this city to be razed? If they had they should realize that we have many fine old homes and two churches as well as some fine factories in the same.
It might be a good thing for this community and elsewhere to awaken and "turn the rascals out" which was a campaign slogan years ago and should now be adopted by us before we ape the damnable Communistic government of 0 Stalin- wind up as have the various millions who have hugged him to their hearts. Mrs. Cannon, who was 75, died late Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospital. She lived at 515 W. street, Covington.
She leaves one son, Frank J. (Bud) Cannon, Covington; one sister, Mrs. Louise Moss, Ft. Mitchell; three grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. Daniel Brown Services will be held at 10:30 a.
m. Friday at the Bullock funeral home, Ludlow, for Daniel Brown, 50 Kenner street, Ludlow, 60-year-old retired conductor for the Southern Railway, who died Tuesday. Burial will be at Danville. A resident of Ludlow for more than six years, Mr. Brown had been employed by the railroad for approximately 35 years.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Mary Brown; three daughters, Mrs. Martha Foley, Ludlow; Mrs. Mary Jo Battle, Birmingham, and Mrs. Jane Baker, Houston, son, Blackwell Brown, Rounoke, four brothers, a sister and three grandchildren.

Miss Maye Hostetler Services were to be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Allison Rose funeral home, Covington, for Miss Maye Hostetler, 121 Second street, Silver Grove, who collapsed and died at her home Monday. Burial will be at Maysville. Dr. Leo Sauter, Campbell county coroner, said Miss Hostetler, who was 50, died of a heart attack.
She was an employe of the Globe Tailoring Cincinnati. She leaves two sisters, Mrs. John Boggs, with whom she made her home, and Mrs. Joseph R. Bennett, Covington; a brother, Frank Hostetler, Venice, and a stepbrother, Robert Bunton, Covington.
Schools Remain Status Quo When Area Is Annexed Special to The Post. FRANKFORT, Oct. 19. If a city annexes its suburbs, such annexation does not include the schools, Assistant Atty. Gen.
W. Owen Keller has explained to Jewell Minton, of Mayfield. Minton wrote that he lives in an area annexed by the city last June and asked what his status is. as to city or county school districts. Keller explained that until the school district boundaries are changed, residents of the newly annexed area should continue to pay county school taxes.
He added that they should pay all city taxes, except the school tax, and their children should go to a county school or pay tuition if they attend a city school Steinfords Open Annual Drive for Toys Continuing a good deed they began 25 years ago, Mr. and Mrs. George Steinford of 513 W. Sixth street, Covington, are making plans now to distribute toys and dolls to needy children at Christmas. Mr.

They also may be taken directly to the Steinford home. Hardesty Challenges Spence on Legislation A challenge was hurled Wednesday night by Thomas W. Hardesty, Republican candidate for Congress, to Rep. Brent Spence, veteran Democratic legislator, to explain provisions of the Spence act, which he termed "Communistic legislation." Mr. Hardesty was honored at a meeting of the Campbell County Republican Club.
In demanding an explanation of the act, Mr. Hardesty said the only explanation made thus far by Rep. Spence is that the administration wanted it. Mr. Hardesty made a general attack on the national administration for its "excessive Albert Howe, club president, ch.S troduced Mr.
Hardesty. Campbell-co Dems Map Drive for Votes An all-out effort will be made by the Democratic campaign committee and party leaders to retain the Campbell county majority for Gov. Earle C. Clements in his race for U. S.
senator on Nov. 7, A. J. Jolly and Mrs. Clara Docter, chairmen of the campaign, said Wednesday night at an organization meeting at the Newport Courthouse.

Refer Couple's Case To Probation Council Cases of a former Covington couple charged with possessing stolen goods were referred to the probation council when they entered guilty pleas before Judge Joseph P.
