Who Is Dylan Arnold? 'You' Season 3 Star Plays Theo Engler (2024)

Leaving an impression. Although Theo Engler’s relationship with Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) was doomed from the start, Dylan Arnold was glad to join the one of a kind journey.

“Well, I feel like as an actor, especially when you’re starting out, you take the auditions. And You is one of those shows that is just so well done and so well-executed and so well-written that it feels like a great opportunity every time it comes around,” Arnold told Teen Vogue in October 2021. “But of course, you never know, so you’ve just gotta do the work and let it go. But I feel like it’s a show that delivers every time, so of course I’d want to be part of it.”

Theo was initially described as a season 3 character who was troubled due to his strained relationship with his stepfather (played by Scott Speedman). For Arnold, that disconnect was a big reason why Theo and Love formed a connection as soon as they met.

“I think for Theo, his family life is not very stable, he doesn’t really have a support system,” he noted to Teen Vogue. “There’s this really interesting balance between him seeing her as a support system and in a weird way, almost a mother figure, but not totally like that, of course. He’s trying to find someone that he can love, and that can love him back.”

Although the duo have a strong bond after Love moves to town with her husband, Joe (Penn Badgley), and their son, that doesn’t last long. Towards the end of the season, Theo gets more desperate to find a happily ever after with Love that just isn’t meant to be.

“I think he’s blinded by love, in more ways than one. He’s so head over heels that he found this person he really connects with,” Arnold added. “It almost feels like toward the end a little like Romeo and Juliet, where’s he swept up in this romantic idea of running away together and saving her. He’s desperate for connection, desperate to find some comfort, stability.”

Season 3 builds up to a standoff between Love and Joe that ends with Love dead at the hands of her husband. Even though season 4 will continue to follow Joe’s story as he runs away to Paris, Arnold reflected on where he saw his character going which includes “a lot of therapy.”

“I think it’s definitely going to be hard for him to trust anyone to love again after that whole debacle,” the After We Collided star shared. “I definitely thought about, it could be interesting if he goes and tries to avenge her. He’ll probably try to move on with his life and figure out how to be happy after all of that.”

2. He Almost Played Two Different Characters on 'You'

Although the Washington native blew viewers away as Theo, he revealed that he auditioned for other roles before finally joining season 3 of You.

"So I auditioned for Joe for season 1, and then I auditioned for Forty for season 2, and now, third time’s the charm, I got Theo in season 3. So my relationship with the show goes way back, and I actually went to college with Elizabeth Lail, who played Guinevere Beck in the first season," he told Teen Vogue. "So I’d seen the first few episodes, but it wasn’t until I got the audition for the third season that I went back and was like okay, let me watch the second season and get the tone of the show."

The S.W.A.T alum added: "I wound up bingeing the entire second season in two and a half days, which I’ve never done with another show I’ve auditioned for. I feel very lucky to be part of the third season, I actually became a huge fan of the show when I was auditioning, so it worked out."

3. His Appearance in the 'Halloween' Franchise Left Quite an Impression

Arnold's appearance as Cameron Elam in the rebooted Halloween movie franchise took a sharp turn in 2021's Halloween Kills. His costar Judy Greer admitted that she couldn't even watch Cameron's death scene.

“Dylan Arnold and I became friends, and we live in the same neighborhood, and I saw this film, and I saw his kill, and I texted him immediately and said, ‘Your mother cannot watch this movie. I’m so sorry, and tell her I said hi, but there’s no way your mom can see this,'” the 27 Dresses star shared with Collider in October 2021.

At the time, the actress revealed that Arnold later agreed about the brutal ending for his character.

“He was like, ‘Noted.’ He hadn’t seen the movie yet, and then when he did see it, he was like, ‘Oh yeah, no, my mom can’t watch this movie,’" she added. "It was so gruesome. I mean, Michael killed [Arnold’s] character for like — it just went on and on and on.”

4. He Has Found Humor in Playing the Boyfriend Role

In a video posted to Blumhouse's official YouTube channel, Arnold reflected on being typecast as a very specific kind of boyfriend.

"Hi, I'm Dylan Arnold. You may remember me from Halloween (2018) when I cheated on my girlfriend. Or Into the Dark: Uncanny Annie when I cheated on my girlfriend," he said in the November 2019 clip. "It's becoming clear to me that Blumhouse is trying to box me into a corner as a bad Halloween boyfriend."

Arnold joked that he wanted to take the time to "let everyone know that that I'm actually a pretty good Halloween boyfriend."

"If I took you to a Halloween party, you would never find out that I kissed another girl. If we were trapped in a murderous board game, I would never Loe about cheating on you thus putting your life in danger," he said while looking into the camera during the funny video. "I would never even cheat on you in the first place. I respect the sanctity of relationships and I respect the sanctity of board game rules."

5. He Is Close to His Family

Over the years, Arnold has used social media in a limited capacity to send his family members positive wishes during their special days.

"Happy Mother’s Day to the *most bestest* mom/role model I could ask for. I love you! ❤️," he captioned a throwback photo via Instagram in May 2019.

For Father's Day, Arnold thanked his dad for "being eternally awesome" in June 2018.
